Larry Wartel on Ben Isitt: ‘I know Ben won’t get nor seek the Police Union endorsement and has expressed his indignation about their undemocratic control over the city budget.’ Open letter to Gregory Hartnell, October 4, 2011.

Hello Gregory,

Many great things in there! Especially disarming police and banning nuke ships. Are there documented cases of nuke ships coming right into the CFB harbour?

I’m really grateful you helped Ben and Rose in the past, even though you have some strong reservations about them. The other non-incumbent council candidates this time can’t win based on their past votes, including Rose, and especially because they don’t even have a ground campaign yet–an imperative for the possibility of victory against well-financed machine incumbents (How to win an election: go knock on doors,http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/second-reading/andrew-steele/how-to-win-an-election-go-knock-on-doors/article2125034/). Ben and team have already visited 1000 homes/apartments. Ben had 7000 votes during the mayoralty, more than enough to have put him on council. Rose at best had approx. 3500 last time.

She may be correct about an increase in homelessness under Dean, just because of the economic recession, which while not as severe in Victoria, could have created more homelessness than the number of shelters and units created by the city would have housed. But I don’t know where she’s getting her numbers.

Email Ben your very important question, Ben@Isitt.ca. Maybe you did, and I want to know the answer directly myself about hiring 40 more police. I sure hope he says he’s against it. I will ask him because I want to know.

I know Ben won’t get nor seek the Police Union endorsement and has expressed his indignation about their undemocratic control over the city budget.

So what’s your price if Ben or Rose wins (and I know it won’t be both)?

Keep it affordable now.

It is disgraceful that the homeless crisis takes a back seat to a new bridge; thank you for caring about that.

Three things you may want to consider for CCC’s platform:

1. Stop the LRT.
2. Stop the Land-based Sewage “Treatment” System.
3. Double the number of buses and make them free–this can be paid for through benefit capture districts on the largest employers and car-subsidy transition revenues shifted to public transit.

Free and expanded buses are known the world over to be the quickest way to get the greatest number of people out of their cars, making the city safer and quieter.

Peace, Larry
