SUNDAY’S ANTI-‘STUPID METER’ RALLY AT LEG: Sharon Noble, Coalition to Stop Smart Meters: “We’re also looking at court – legal options. Human rights issues. There’s a major human rights issue here.”

Anti-smart meter coalition rallies at legislature

Sunday: Hundreds of people concerned about B.C. Hydro’s wireless Smart Meter program gather in front of the legislature to denounce the program, rejecting the utility’s assurances that levels of electromagnetic radiation from the compulsory meters do not pose a health hazard. Concerns were also raised about the cost of the program, a lack of consultation before it was implemented and the cost.

The Coalition to Stop Smart Meters held a protest on the lawns of the Legislature Sunday afternoon to draw attention to their bid to stop BC Hydro from installing the new contentious meters on homes and businesses.

Coalition Director Sharon Noble says if the utility wont back down, the group wants to push for a referendum on the meters.

“We’re also looking at court – legal options. Human rights issues. There’s a major human rights issue here.”

Noble says they are urging people to tell BC Hydro they will not allow smart meters to be installed on their homes.

“Put signs on their meters to refuse to allow a wireless meter to be put on their home. Tell [BC] Hydro you will not agree to it. People are locking up their meters; they’re putting boxes around them. Some fellow in Sidney even has his canoe tied to his meter.”

Colwood Councillor Brian Tucknott and Victoria Councillor Philippe Lucas spoke at the rally.

The group gathered petitions today. Noble says they will be presented to the Legislature when it is back in session.
