JIM FOLEY: Nuclear power ‘industry and its allies are now pressuring all levels of government for large new subsidies to support construction and operation of a new generation of reactors and fuel-cycle facilities.’

NUCLEAR WATES REMAINS A DANGER

Nuclear power is “safe” only if you ignore the problem of nuclear waste.

Nuclear waste must be isolated from all living organisms for at least 100,000 years to be safe.

Few architects have to design anything to last more than 100 years, so how do you build a nuclear waste facility to last for millenia?

Nuclear power is cheaper only if you do not take into account costs of plant decommissioning and nuclear waste storage (and the economic consequences of nuclear accidents).

The industry has a long and expensive history of taxpayer subsidies and excessive charges to utility  ratepayers.

These subsidies not only enabled existing reactors to be built in the first place, but have supported their operations for decades.

The industry and its allies are now pressuring all levels of government for large new subsidies to support the construction and operation of a new generation of reactors and fuel-cycle facilities.

The U. S. may be saved from a bit expansion because Congress has to approve the loan guarantees required for new construction to go ahead, but it remains to be seen what happens elsewhere.

Since Fukushima, I don’t know how anyone can take nuclear power seriously.
