Ugly barn-like Canada Pavilion, built in Vancouver by Chicago outfit, embarrasses anyone with eyes to see

PAVILLION MAY ALSO BE ILLEGAL

ARCHITECTS SAY THREE LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT WERE IGNORED

IN RUSH TO FINISH BY FRIDAY OPENING

There are many valid reasons for a thinking Canadian person, and particularly a thinker in this province, to be upset with the FIVE RING CIRCUS.

Thousands of homeless people still on the streets of the ‘Best Place on Earth,’  official secrecy, cost-overruns, budget deficits, environmental degradation, unsettled native land claims, cuts to vital social welfare and health programmes to pay for the two week party, no real snow, etc., etc., etc.

Now, add aesthetics to the list.

The Canada Pavillion looks like a Surrey barn with a big blue Macdonald’s arch in front (for no good aesthetic or functional reason).

It is an embarrassment to the Canadian people, to the government of the host country and to its architects and designers, not to mention that it was built (or rather, is still under construction) by a Chicago-based company, as per NAFTA which dictates Canadian taxpayers can pay the wages of American workers in the glorious world of ‘free trade.’

[The Tyee has the best coverage on the Five Ring Circus, and a link to an article on the barn pavillion will be found in the Comments section below, or in the CCC BLOGROLL to the right.]
