Former Victoria Mayor Michael Young and Councillor Murray Glazier: R. I. P.

FORMER MAYOR PETER POLLEN CREDITS YOUNG WITH PREVENTING

‘RAMPANT DEVELOPMENT AROUND THE HARBOUR’

Two former members of Victoria City Council, Mayor Michael Young and Councillor Murray Glazier, died recently.

The Glaswegian native, father of two daughters, served two terms as Councillor and two terms as Mayor.

He was influenced by Peter Pollen, another out-of-towner who went on to become a Councillor and Mayor.

Mayor Michael Young followed Mayor Peter Pollen‘s ideas on heritage preservation, downtown highrise height restriction, and careful Inner Harbour planning (including planned banning of seaplanes landing there).

Mr. Pollen was quoted in an obituary printed in the Victoria Times Colonist saying that Mr. Young ‘was a soft-spoken, highly intelligent man who had worked with him to prevent rampant development around the harbour.’

Flags at Victoria City Hall and in Beacon Hill Park were flown at half-mast for more than a week to commemorate his passing.

Murray Glazier, born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on July 15, 1935, husband to his surviving wife Leslie, father to daughters Joan and Ann, served on the Victoria City Council for eight years, and also served on numerous boards over the years including the Water, Salvation Army Building Fund, Regional Hospital and Art Gallery boards (to name a few), and received the Honourary Citizen of the Year award for his service to the community, ‘especially his dedication to the Victoria Symphony.’
