TERRY WALLER ON VANOC’S HOLD ON VAN: ‘Nobody I spoke to over there is in favour of the Games’

EX-VANCOUVERITE SAYS VANCOUVER MAYOR GREGOR ROBERTSON

HAS ‘TURNED THE CITY OVER TO’ VANOC

I’ve just returned from a few days in Vancouver, where I used to live, glad to escape before the Olympic Games begin.

It’s not going to be a pleasant experience for residents, what with street closures, reduced transit schedules, longer travel times, surgery delays, airport-type security and so on.

There’s an unpleasant whiff of totalitarianism about the way VANOC operates.

The mayor and his council seem to have turned the city over to them without a murmur.

Nobody I spoke to over there is in favour of the Games.

Is all the cost and trouble worth it?

Absolutely not!

By the way, VANOC has suggested that local businesses close for a couple of weeks and give their staff a holiday.

What planet do those people live on?
