MEGAN EVANS ON CANDACE FERTILE ON LINDA ROGERS: ‘A review that doesn’t automatically praise a piece of writing doesn’t mean it should be categorized as “hate mail”‘

POETRY REVIEWER DID HER JOB

Re: “Poetry book reviewer’s claims were off-base,” Jan. 28.

I read the book review and it seems perfectly valid to me.

It is an opinion, something to which the reviewer is entitled.

I didn’t find it to be “savage” or “badly written.”

The writing style was commented on and parallels between the poetry and events of the world were drawn — was this not the intent of the poetry?

To provoke opinion and emotional response?

Also, I can’t help but wonder about the author’s comment: “It is the first negative poetry review in a lifetime of writing and most of the poems have been published elsewhere and won national and international awards.”

Whether you are a writer, a musician or an artist of any kind, your work is always open to the scrutiny and praise of others.

Just because you’ve been published and given awards doesn’t mean that you are immune to criticism.

A review that doesn’t automatically praise a piece of writing doesn’t mean it should be categorized as “hate mail.”
