DON GUILLERMO HARTNELL signed an oath of loyalty to Mexico, stayed in Monterey to edit Spanish section of ‘Californian’, first California newspaper

After the capitulation of Mexican California to United States Army troops in Monterey, Don Guillermo Hartnell nevertheless signed an oath of loyalty to the defeated southern republic of Mexico, but stayed in Monterey with his family to assume customhouse and translation duties for the new administration and to edit a Spanish section of the first newspaper in California.

This caused some tension in the De la Guerra family, particularly with Don Pablo de la Guerra who wanted to fight the Gringos…

I’ve found four used copies of Susanna Bryant Dakin’s classic book of Hartnelliana on Amazon, running from a low of $12.00 US to $75.00 US:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0007F9G1M/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&qid=1269970289&sr=1-3-fkmr0&condition=used

The book is fascinating, and I am transcribing more of it at another site called LA ROSA: goyodelarosa.wordpress.com

There is a link to LA ROSA in the CCC BLOGROLL to the right, under ‘LA ROSA.’

Hope you can find it, and enjoy…

I suspect we may be distant cousins, as I believe that our family here in Victoria is descended from Don Guillermo Hartnell y Dona Maria Teresa de la Guerra Hartnell, and thus we are old Californios who have somehow managed to stray far away to Canada, far from the old rancho Alisal, alas…

    Adios, amigo!
