‘Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge  has significant heritage value’

 

‘Victoria’s Johnson Street Bridge has significant heritage value because it has a unique bascule bridge system created by one of the most famous bridge designers in the world,’ says Richard Gilbert, writing in the Journal of Commerce.

The new article by Mr. Gilbert, dated January 25, 2010 appeared at the website of the Journal of Commerce which bills itself as Western Canada’s Construction Newspaper, and is published by Reed Business Information.

The article is accompanied by an old black and white photo of  Joseph Strauss’ endangered bridge in Victoria, apparently from the archives of the City of Victoria, with the caption: ‘Johnson Street Bridge opened in 1924 and was designed by Joseph Strauss.’

Mr. Gilbert’s article goes on to mention that ‘Joseph Strauss designed the Johnson Street Bridge, which was completed in 1924 at a cost of $918,000…

‘Joseph Strauss also designed and built the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco between 1933 and 1937.’

The article has other technical and historical information of interest to the construction, engineering and architectural history communities.
