HARRY ATKINSON ON CANADA IN AFGHANISTAN: ‘We must publicly abhor the political decisions and madness of a war that continues to kill our country’s youth’

The news brought the sad awareness of another five Canadian deaths in Afghanistan, hard on the heels of the loss of Lt. Andrew Nuttall of Victoria last week.

I felt sadness well up and emphatically knew the devastation and emptiness that must exist in the hearts of the mothers, fathers, siblings, husbands, wives and other loved ones.

Our American neighbours also lost another eight of their youth to the war in Afghanistan in the last two days…

It is right to honour the courage and dedication of our troops; this war wasn’t of their making.

Having done that, we must publicly abhor the political decisions and madness of a war that continues to kill our country’s youth and waste Canada’s resources and good reputation.

There must be a more sane solution available to a mature nation.
