ERIC G. MANNING, UVIC DEAN EMERITUS OF ENGINEERING: ‘Buy six Travellers’ Inns that are up for sale, which could provide 370 rooms for the homeless’

NEW BRIDGE PLAN WASTES VICTORIA TAXPAYERS’ MONEY

The estimated cost of a new Blue Bridge is $63 million.

The cost of repairing our present bridge, a very unusual and historic structure, is $35 million.

That’s an extra $28 million for a new bridge, which will come out of taxpayers’ pockets.

Why on earth is Council so careless with our money?

What could we do with the $28 million?

We could leave it in our pockets and use it to help make ends meet.

Or, if you’d rather spend it but you’d like to get some value for your hard-earned dollars, the editor of Focus magazine says we could likely buy six Travellers’ Inns that are up for sale, which could provide 370 rooms for the homeless.

That would make a pretty good dent in our homelessness problem.

You can help stop this mad waste of your money.

It should be noted that the inflated $35 million figure is one which is being bruited about by Mayor Dean Fortin, up from the considerably lower $23,600,000 figure indicated in the Delcan Report which would be needed to repair the bridge.

The Mayor has never properly explained how he arrived at the inflated $35,000,000 cost estimate.
