DENNIS ROBINSON QUESTIONS PLANS TO DEMOLISH JOHNSON STREET BRIDGE: ‘Why can’t we fix the present bridge? Why are they rushing this project? What about the homeless?’

BRIDGE ISSUE SPURS FURTHER MISTRUST OF ALL POLITICIANS

I do not enjoy walking around outside on a cold, blustery day, but for the last week, I and other members of johnsonstreetbridge.org have been doing just that.

While collecting petition signatures to compel the City of Victoria to hold a referendum, we have been listening to the people.

“Why can’t we fix the present bridge?

“Why are they rushing this project?

“What about the homeless?

“Why do we need sewage treatment?”

These comments are not only from City [of Victoria] taxpayers, but from the taxpayers in surrounding municipalities who are ineligible to sign the petition.

There seems to be a theme of distrust  of our elected officials at all levels of government, and the Johnson Street Bridge debate is fueling this belief.

With the stampede for stimulus money over, there is no imposed deadline for a completion of a new bridge.

There is also plenty of time for consultation with those who would prefer to see the present bridge repaired, and the millions saved go toward funding other important projects.
