TENT CITY DISMANTLED’: NEW VIDEO BY JONATHAN LE DREW: Beacon Hill Park Outsider Homeless Camp is broken up by Victoria Police Department

‘Tent City Dismantled’ is a new video made by well-known Salts Spring Island activist-videographer and City of Victoria Councillor Candidate Jonathon Le Drew.

It shows the shocking encounter between homeless Outsider activists and the Victoria Police Department in beautiful Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, Vancouver Island, Pacifica.

Five people were arrested and released the same day, including David Arthur Johnston.

The video is extraordinary in that it shows Victoria Mayoral Candidate Kristen Woodruff doing incredible surrealistic handstands while about 15 cops were deployed and 14 more were on alert, ridiculous overkill when one considers that these campers broke no laws, according to the recent BC Supreme Court ruling of Madame Justice Ross, which asserted the Charter-protected rights of all Canadians to the security of their persons, and is referenced in Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Kristen Woodruff maintains her balance in adversity, while chaos and police thuggery swirl around her.

Her yogic balance is thus manifest for all the world to witness.

The Victoria Police Department are being used by the Lowe Liberal-Socialist Estbablishment to wage a cruel and unusual class war against the poorest of the poor in Victoria’s parks.

The police’s marching orders were given by lame duck Liberal Victoria Mayor Alan Lowe’s Socialist Establishment Enforcer, Dean Fortin (VCE-NDP), while Mr. Lowe pursued highly controversial business deals with members of the Communist Party of China.

The so-called People’s Republic of China has one of the most horrific human rights abuse records on Mother Earth.

The City of Victoria is now employing methods of police enforcement not dissimilar to those employed in this Orwellian nightmare state.

43 VICTORIA ELECTION CANDIDATES GIVEN GLANCES IN TOM HAWTHORN’S BLOG: CCC BLOG maintained by ‘Goyo de la Rosa’ (nom de plume de Gregoire Hartnell) mentioned in Globe + Mail article, October 29, 2008

CCC   …  VICTORIA ELECTION HISTORY FROM A CONCERNED CITIZENS’ COALITION CANDIDATE FOR VICTORIA CITY COUNCIL   …   CCC

– ‘Goyo de la Rosa’ (Gregory Hartnell)   October 31, 2008

Tom Hawthorn, a Victoria-based writer who has a column that appears regularly in the Toronto-based Globe and Mail corporatist WAR PARTY newspaper, devoted a recent piece to the current Victoria Election, affecting surprise at the number of the candidates, all 43 of us, most of whom wouldn’t mind deposing all of the decadent remnants (incumbent Councillors Madoff, Fortin, Chandler, Thornton-Joe and Young) of the ‘lame duck’ Lowe Liberal government, presently administered this month by the ‘Establishment Socialist Enforcer’ City Councillor Dean Fortin.

Each candidate is described in a pithy one-liner, some very short and somewhat sarcastic, as in the case of our own CCC Councillor Candidate Father Allen Jones.  I am never quite sure where these kinds of articles are coming from, philosophically speaking, but the underlying unspoken subtext seems to be something like this: aren’t these people all a bit strange?   After all, everybody knows that civic politics is boring, not worth bothering with, low voter turner is understandable, no place in civic politics for partisanship, yadda yadda…

Probably one of the worst offenders in this line is the unhumourous Jack Knox, an embarrassment to all real buffoons.  This sad case is a columnist in the Times Colonist WAR PARTY daily monopoly rag, who referred recently to the usual gang of nut bars, or some such rubbish, referring to us, of course.  Was Jack referring to all of us, I wonder, or only to a few so-called ‘fringe’ candidates who he did not have the courage to name?  Just asking, Jack.

This kind of unapologetic contempt for public-minded citizens who are still interested in the great dramatic art of democracy (which is certainly not a science) simply manufactures consent for the atrocious status quo.  I’ve read just enough of Noam Chomsky to understand who the manipulative Machiavellians are in this little benighted corporatist burg, completely in thrall as they are at the moment to the lies of the forces of Liberal-Socialist DEATH CULTURE.

Anyway, Tom, thanks so much for the one-line mention of this Concerned Cititzens’ Coalition Weblog, which seems to be the only such daily ‘election blog’ that is being kept during this campaign by one of the candidates.  I should mention Robert Randall’s blog, also found here, but Robert is busy campaigning more than I am, it seems, and is not visiting his blog every day.  Now that I have finally figured out how to scan images, I am happy as a duck in water, conjoining my three primary interests in this  life: spirituality, art and politics.  Who was it who said something about ‘rendering unto Caesar?’

I love Our Lord Jesus Christ without shame or apology, love the great unsung OUTSIDER artists of our town who aren’t hung up on these artificial distinctions, and love how truly enlightened politics can be conjoined in a candidate such as our very own Victoria Mayoral Candidate Kristen Woodruff, who manages to mesh all of these things into a seamless garment, all wrapped around her in one beautiful unit.  Please vote for this charming and charismatic young woman for a real term of HOPE in Victoria’s history.

‘THE BIG PICTURE’, GALLERY OF CLAYOQUOT ARRESTEES BY ANDY SINATS FROM ‘CLAYOQUOT MASS TRIALS’: the best book on the biggest civil disobedience event in Canadian history, by Ron MacIsaac + Anne Champagne

See if you recognize any of these suspects, castigated by the then NDP Establishment premier of the day as ‘enemies of the province of B. C.’

The photographs were taken outside the Victoria Courthouse on Burdett Street in the summer of 1993, I believe, by Latvian-American-Canadian silkscreen artist Andy Sinats (Off the Wall Graphics, Chinatown) and a number of assistants, one of whom was Ian McAllister, if I am not mistaken.

Estimates vary as to how many people were actually arrested, ranging between the upper 800s and the lower 900s.  Not all of the Clayoquot arrestees, among whom I am a grateful veteran, wanted to have their headshots taken by Andy at the time.  He wasn’t even sure what he would do with them at first, but took them on faith that eventually they would become a BIG PICTURE poster or part of a book.

Eventually they found a home in the ‘Clayoquot  Mass Trials’ book by noted ‘pro-bono’ Langford Conservationist lawyer Ron MacIsaac, who helped form the Concerned Citizens in 1989.  Mr. MacIsaac co-wrote that bestselling book on the Clayoquot Summers, as they were called, with author Anne Champagne.

THIS LA ROSA COVER FEATURED A DETAIL OF THE FAMOUS UNKNOWN ‘CLAYOQUOT SHAMAN WOMAN,’ FOUND IN THE BC ARCHIVES AND THUS PUBLIC DOMAIN.

THE FULL PHOTO OF THE CLAYOQUOT SHAMAN WOMAN WAS SERIGRAPHED BY ANDY SINATS IN HIS STIFLING HOT CHINATOWN STUDIO ONTO HUNDREDS OF T-SHIRTS WHICH WERE SOLD  TO RAISE MONEY FOR LEGAL DEFENCE COSTS FOR THE ARRESTEES.

Some of these Off the Wall t-shirts had a huge picture of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the back, which thus tied the Gandhian non-violent civil disobedience philosophy started in colonial South Africa and India, to the liberation of Afro-American peoples in the deep South of Gringolandia, to the Clayoquot Summer efforts of these Canadians and foreigners for…

PENNY-PINCHING SCOT RON MacISAAC, CONCERNED CITIZENS’ FAVOURITE CONSERVATIONIST LAWYER, says he is surprised by Victoria Mayor Alan Lowe’s reaction to Madame Justice Ross’ homeless’ Charter rights ruling

CCC  … CO-AUTHOR WITH ANNE CHAMPAGNE OF THE ‘CLAYOQUOT MASS TRIALS’ BOOK, SENIOR LANGFORD LAWYER GIVES HISTORY OF HOMELESSNESS IN TWENTIETH CENTURY IN PITHY LETTER TO EDITOR OF MONDAY MAG, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2008   …   CCC

I was surprised that the Victoria mayor did not recognize the Supreme Court decision for the wake-up call it was for him and other politicians to press the feds and the provincial govenment to solve the problem – and quickly.

Look at our history: we had homeless in the ’30s and those in power said, “Why don’t you work, like other men do?”  Then in 1945, the Scandinavian countries adopted the policy of caring for everyone.  This was copied by all the first-world countries – even the U.S. (but the U.S. insurance companies held onto medical care).  In the U.K., the titled people charged tourists admission to their stately homes.  This all ended with the trickle-down theory of Reagan, Thatcher, Mulroney and Martin: leave the corporations and wealthy with low taxes and their money will trickle down to the poor.

We should get back to caring for the homeless, if only because it’s cheaper than putting them in the army, the mental hospital, drug and alcohol treatment centres or leaving them on the street with that hidden high cost.

NOTA BENE: Mr. MacIsaac was instrumental in helping my parents Peter and Sheila Hartnell form the Greater Victoria Concerned Citizens’ Association (GVCCA), the legal group that helped save Saint Anne’s Academy along with the Save Saint Anne’s Community Rescue Coalition in the late eighties and early nineties.

He provided much pro-bono legal advice to many Clayoquot arrestees in 1993-94, and is still involved in Conservation lawsuits to this day in his beloved Langford, where he lives on the edge of the lake with his lovely wife.

The GVCCA later evolved into the CONCERNED CITIZENS’ COALITION, founded by the present editor of the CCC BLOG.

Irene Faulkner holds Madame Justice Ross’ judgement at Beacon Hill Park

LAWYERS CATHERINE BOIES PARKER and

IRENE FAULKNER TELL POLITICOS BACKGROUND HISTORY OF

RECENT BC SUPREME COURT RULING OF MADAME JUSTICE ROSS

An apparently hastily-organized public meeting at Arts Connection at 2740 Quadra organized by the Committee to End Homelessness in Victoria drew a crowd of about 75 people to hear lawyers Catherine Boies Parker and Irene Faulkner explain the background history of the recent BC Supreme Court ruling by Madame Justice Ross asserting that the Charter Rights of the homeless to security of their persons must be upheld by the City of Victoria.

The meeting was not advertised on the City of Victoria website’s official list of All Candidates’ Meetings, a fact that alarmed me when I discovered it earlier today.  I was told by Lise Wrigley by email, one of the event’s organizers, that it was not exactly an All Candidates’ Meeting, as the City was not likely to be interested in publicizing a meeting that showed the public how it had been beaten by these lawyers.

Nevertheless, the meeting did attract three Victoria Mayoral Candidates, homeless dancer-yoga teacher Kristen Woodruff (endorsed by all three CCC Candidates for Council, Father Allen Jones, Patrick Jamieson and myself), independent Hugh Kruzel, and the Green Party’s Steve Filipovic.

The mainstream media did not seem to be in attendance, a fact noted later by homeless advocate David ___, who decried their absence.  He suggested that it fit a pattern whereby they don’t usually bother show up at the All Candidates’ Meetings, either preferring to ignore them as of interest only to special interest groups, or to use the excuse that there are too many candidates, and thus it is almost impossible to keep track of who said what.  It also gives the mainstream media more leeway to cook up stories out of thin air, he said.

The so-called ‘alternative media’ was represented, however.  Jonathan Le Drew, a Victoria City Council Candidate and ‘Love and Fearlessness’ videographer, shot the proceedings for the whole of the two hours alloted for rental of the hall.  Concerned Citizens’ Coalition Council Candidate Patrick Jamieson, Founder and Editor of the monthly Island Catholic News, was seen scribbling in his notebook, trying to decipher the legalese of Mesdames Boies Parker and Faulkner.

Doreen Marion Gee of the James Bay Beacon, Janine Bancroft of StreetNewz, Andrew MacLeod of Tyee.ca, and Jason Yeomans of Monday Mag were also mentioned by David ___ as having been recognized by him in the crowd.  The meeting was introduced by Rose Henry, another Victoria City Couoncillor Candidate associated with the Homeless Nation website.  She relied unduly on a huge screen upon which were projected pages from the website, which were fiddled with by one or two men in the front centre of the room, who effectively blocked this writer’s view of those ladies at the front that we were meant to  hear.

While it is good to know that websites such as ‘Homeless Nation’ exist and are used by the homeless right across Canada, this 21st century reliance on computers and projected imagery on big screens is difficult to accept for this writer.  I prefer the old fashioned method of unadorned speech-making, one speaker at a time.

The telling of the background story leading up to the Court cases was interesting in so far as it went, but frankly, after a while the story seemed to get too technical for me to bear, overloaded with legalese.  Lawyers tend to speak a different language than most people I know.  I caught Councillor Candidate Tavis Dodds’  attention, and we withdrew to a large hall outside the rented room.  We must have been getting too excited in our conversation, however, and unwittingly were distracting those still inside, as Rose Henry came out at one point to gently chastise us to quieten down.  We apologized and continued by whispers to talk about our love for our wives, God-consciousness, the lies and shenanigans of the sold-out Council, etc.

When an opportunity came for audience members to question the lawyers, many people tended to go on too long with meandering speeches, never getting around to actually posing questions.  When the questions finally did come, most became too pointedly legal, so Mesdames Boies Parker and Faulkner reverted to a standard refrain: we are not here to provide legal advice, which no doubt frustrated  some in the crowd, particularly John C. Turner, Jon Valentine and Chris Munkascsi, who seem to be intent on launching some sort of lawsuit against the City of Victoria themselves.  Just before leaving, I took Mr. Hunter aside and cautioned  him to try to find a pro-bono lawyer, when he mentioned talking with one in Vancouver who wanted a guarantee of cash up front before proceeding.  That alarmed me.  Be very careful with lawyers, gentlemen.

Also seen in passing: StreetNewz vendor Ted H. on his scooter with his beloved mutt (outside), former one-term VCE Mayor David Turner, Jim Jamieson (Patrick Jamieson’s father), who sat next to me and quietly cracked jokes throughout the proceedings, Vicky ___, a homeless advocate and vocal attendee at many frustrating City Council meetings pertaining to homeless’ issues, and a number of other Victoria City Councillor Candidates.

These included: Incumbent Green Party Councillor Sonya Chandler, John Luton, Chris Munkacsi, John Hunter, and Jon Valentine.

Concerned Citizens, Victoria Election Candidates and all other interested citizen-politicos should be aware that the City of Victoria has recently updated its official list of known All Candidates’ Meetings to be held in Victoria during this very important Victoria Civic Election.

For some strange reason known only to them, they have neglected to provide any information on the very important meeting organized by the Committee to End Homelessness this afternoon at the Arts Connection, 2740 Quadra, just north of Hillside on the west side of the street.  It is a new concrete building that was once the Union Building, I believe.  The meeting on Homelessness is slated to start at 4:00 pm this afternoon at the Arts Connection.

This meeting features an opening address by well-known Homeless Nation activist Rose Henry, a fellow independent Councillor Candidate in this election.

That address will be followed by presentations by Catherine Boies Parker and Irene Faulkner, lawyers who represented the public interest in the recent BC Supreme Court, where Madame Justice Ross found that the City of Victoria had violated the Charter-protected rights of the homeless in Victoria to the security of their persons by non-provision of adequate social housing to protect them from the elements.

For a live link to the City of Victoria’s website, please consult the CCC Blogroll to the right, under ‘City of Victoria’.

Please try to attend this very important meeting to find out what we should all do next to fight for social justice, in solidarity with the poorest of the poor.

Peace to all your families
