He was raised by his uncle and was at university when WW2 began.

After his release from imprisonment in Siberia, he served in the Polish Forces in the Middle East and in Britain.

It was there that he married his beloved wife, Mary.

He studied in Krakow University and the Royal School of Mines in London.

After receiving his B.Sc. and Dip. Ing., he worked in South West Africa (now Namibia) for three years.

He returned to England and worked at the Oppenheimer Lab at Cambridge University, attaining his PhD in 1954.

Jan, Mary and their four children emigrated to Edmonton in 1957, where he taught at the University of Alberta until 1964.

With his family (now six children), he travelled across the USA for a year, and then taught at UBC.

He retired in 1983.

He was awarded an Honourary Degree from the University of Lublin in 1979.

Until he suffered a stroke in 1996, he worked happily in a house-in-the-woods in Mission, B. C.

He died of heart failure November 4th, in Victoria, B. C.

Let the words of my mouth

and the meditation of my heart

be acceptable in Thy sight,

O Lord, my strength and my redeemer
