RAGING GRANNIES PUZZLED BY SNOBBISH REMARK BY COLUMNIST
ADRIAN CHAMBERLAIN CALLING THEM ‘NERDY’
‘Outrageous activists, lousy singers, elegant dressers, but “nerdy”?’
In an article about the storytellers’ conference in Victoria, Adrian Chamberlain described four local groups as “nerdy” (July 5).
While we are unsure how morris dancers, church bell ringers and the Red Hat Society warrant the adjective “nerdy,” we’re really puzzled at how we Raging Grannies can be described as such.
Raging Grannies have been called many things: Outrageous activists, lousy singers, elegant dressers. But “nerdy?”
To give just three examples, we were instrumental in having safety plans established whenever nuclear ships are docked in Victoria, we successfully panhandled this Canada Day for funds to increase the open hours of Our Place and we confronted Michael Ignatieff about asbestos at a town hall meeting this March, which ignited a national momentum to have Canada ban the export of this carcinogenic mineral to developing countries.
How “nerdy” is that?

The notion of dressing up as caricatures of old ladies for acts of orchestrated “defiance” is, by definition, nerdy.
