WILLIAM PERRY: ‘Monarchy, like slavery, sexual + class discrimination, + colonial exploitation is a throwback to our shameful past’

MONARCHY AN IMPEDIMENT

The argument, or at least the one the Monarchist League is focused on, is the importance of the royals, what they bring to us, and low cost to support them.

Canadians pay $1.75 per person per year.  That is a lot of money.

Should the British monarchy continue?  I think the better question is: can we afford it?

It is the last remaining relic to a past where Britain could stand alone, and the last remaining barrier to a future where we most definitely cannot.

The monarchy, like slavery, sexual and class discrimination, and colonial exploitation is a throwback to our shameful past, and an impediment to our bright future.

How much are you willing to pay for a president? Nicolas Sarkozy gave himself a 70 percent payrise when he came to power. Last week the opposition in the Assemblée Nationale criticised a 26 rise in his expenditures compared to 2007.

A very costly French president, but is he worth it?

So, you consider $1.75 for the Canadian Monarchy too much. What model would you prefer? The French, who cost the French taxpayer twice as much?

Thanks for your comment. I can’t speak for Mr. Perry, but as a monarchist writer to the Victoria News brought up the $1.75 figure, I would counter that by saying that any amount spent on the English monarchy by loyal Canadians is too much.

As for how much the Canadian people might be prepared to pay for a republican president, I am sure that we wouldn’t tolerate paying any more than we pay the present Prime Minister.

In any case, this whole business of how much the monarchy costs is not the most troublesome aspect of the archaic institution.

By mentioning the $1.75 figure, you monarchists are engaging in a completely crass argument, an obvious attempt to divert the debate away from the very nature of the institution itself, which is the essence of the whole argument, in my humble estimation.
