by Gregory Hartnell, former student of the Christian Brothers of Ireland
The Ryan Report on the horrific history of Irish Roman Catholic Church sex abuse in the last century was released last week, precipitating global interest among the Catholic community.
Most Catholics I know wonder why the Irish Government did not go further than it did, and name names. It seems that the Christian Brothers of Ireland and other guilty parties were successful in convincing the Irish government to keep the names of the abusers secret, which of course helps no-one.
As a former student of the Irish Christian Brothers at Saint Louis College here in Victoria, British Columbia in the early sixties, I am ashamed of this history, which has stained the whole Church. I find it completely reprehensible that the Christian Brothers of Ireland and others responsible for this abuse are still apparently resorting to cover-up tactics.
As long as these sins of ommission are allowed to keep happening, the Pope’s protestations of horror and condemnation ring hollow. We still have a huge problem in our Church, and it starts at the top in Roma, and filters down to the seminaries.
Time to purge all predatory paedophile perverts.
